Hug inaugurates climate-neutral bakery

Malters - Hug has opened one of Switzerland’s most modern, energy-efficient production centers for baked goods in Malters in the canton of Lucerne. The family company with a rich tradition also describes as a milestone the fact that since June 1 the company is being run by two women as part of a co-management structure for the first time.

Hug has celebrated the opening of its bakehouse in Malters in the canton of Lucerne in the presence of numerous guests. According to a press release, the bakehouse is one of the most modern and energy-efficient production centers for baked goods in Switzerland. This “generational project” was five years in the planning, with the construction taking three years to complete. It will lead to the creation of 100 new jobs on a production area that has now been doubled. Hug has invested a total of 63 million Swiss francs in the expansion of the production center, the relocation from Trimbach in the canton of Solothurn and in production systems.

“I am proud to have this innovative and sustainable family business with us in the canton of Lucerne and I would like to thank the Hug family for their loyalty and their connection to the Malters site”, commented Fabian Peter, member of the cantonal government of Lucerne and head of the Department of Construction, Environment and Economic Affairs, at the inauguration ceremony. “I am pleased that the company is creating new jobs here, producing in a modern and energy-efficient manner and therefore playing its part in achieving our climate goals”, Peter concludes.

According to Andreas Hug, Chairman of the Administrative Board, the energy concept moves fully away from fossil fuels. Groundwater and operational waste heat are used to generate warmth and cooling. By the end of 2022, Hug will install more photovoltaic units on the roof of the bakery.

At the inauguration event, the fourth generation, represented by the previous managing director Andreas Hug, handed over the operational management of the company to Anna Hug. She will be responsible for managing the company in the fifth generation of the family together with Marianne Wüthrich Gross. This is the first time since the company was first founded in 1877 that it will be run by two women.
