Planning for burnout clinic in Vitznau enters next round

Vitznau - The plans for a new health center in Gruebisbalm near Vitznau in the canton of Lucerne have been comprehensively revised following concerns raised by the Federal Commission for the Protection of Nature and Cultural Heritage. Zeitraum Planungen AG and Roman Hutter Architektur from Lucerne were both involved.

Planning for a burnout clinic in the spa town of Gruebisbalm in the municipality of Vitznau is entering the next round. A fully revised design plan, taking into account the concerns raised by the Federal Commission for the Protection of Nature and Cultural Heritage (FCNC), can now be seen on the website of the Vitznau municipality. It was for the most part realized by Zeitraum Planungen AG and Roman Hutter Architektur, both based in Lucerne. The architectural firm Miller & Maranta from Basel was also involved.

Located at an altitude of 900 meters, the clinic will have space to accommodate 80 patients with job-related depression, known as burnout. This major project was brought into being by Paul Schaub, an entrepreneur from Basel-Landschaft. According to an article in the Luzerner Zeitung newspaper, the build is expected to cost around 120 million Swiss francs. On 13 February, the electorate of Vitznau approved the revised plan by a clear majority. The clinic will now no longer be located in the spa and sports zone but in the tourism zone instead. The Canton of Lucerne must also grant its approval.

The FCNC had criticized that expanding the health center as originally planned with five larger buildings to the south-east would “significantly undermine” the protection goals, with two located close to the Rigiweg path and the Rigi Mountain Railway. The new plans have now merged all buildings together into a single complex with six interconnected wings.

The future clinic will only be reachable via the Rigi Mountain Railway and will not have any parking. Paul Schaub expects construction to begin by this autumn at the latest and for the clinic to open its doors in 2025.
