AEW Energie creates linked heat system in Zell
Aarau/Zell - School buildings in Zell in the canton of Lucerne will be kept warm using waste heat from the factory of the poultry processor Bell. The linked heat system has been created by AEW Energie AG from Aarau in the canton of Aargau. It planned, funded, and built the plant and is responsible for maintenance.
A high school building, a dual gymnasium, and a kindergarten in Zell will be heated exclusively using waste heat from the nearby poultry processing plant owned by Basel-based company Bell Schweiz AG according to a press release from AEW Energie AG. The Aargau-based energy company has planned, funded, and built the linked heat system for this and is also responsible for maintenance of the plant. The linked heat system will transport waste heat from the cooling units at Bell Schweiz AG in Zell along a 110-meter pipeline into a heat store spanning 120 cubic meters near the multipurpose school building. AEW Energie writes that even on very cold days the store is able to heat the school buildings and ensure a supply of warm water.
The press release states that the community, poultry processor, and energy company have created a lighthouse project in the linked heat system where there are no losers. Stephan Wolf, Head of the Poultry Organizational Unit at Bell Schweiz AG, commented: “We have a sustainable heating solution, AEW can run its business, and schoolchildren in Zell can be comfortably warm in winter.” A statement from local councilor Urs Lustenberger asserts that the plant has already proven successful during the last heating period. By using waste heat, the community will save around 50,000 liters of fuel oil per winter.
The majority of the waste heat from the cooling units will be used by Bell to heat water required for the slaughterhouse. The school buildings use around 15 percent, while a smaller share will be used by the Baugenossenschaft an der Luther building cooperative to heat three apartment blocks.
