Bieri concludes modernization of military vehicle covers
Grosswangen - Bieri’s procurement project for the Swiss Army has come to an end after more than ten years. Over two project series since 2015, the manufacturer of tarpaulin solutions from the canton of Lucerne has equipped DURO tactical vehicles with particularly durable covers that are difficult to detect via thermal imaging sensors.
After more than ten years, Bieri Tenta AG has now concluded also the second project series for the delivery of covers for the fleet of DURO military vehicles, as the company has reported. This procurement initiative was part of the modernization package approved in 2015 to refurbish 2,200 Swiss Army utility vehicles. Its intended aim was to increase troop safety and extend the service life of the vehicles until 2040.
Following the production of the first prototype in December 2015 and the start of series production with delivery in 2017, the first series was completed in January 2024. In July of the same year, Bieri started the second and final project series. This involved adapting the vehicle tarpaulins to the new bodies. In addition, Bieri delivered another 1,500 units as part of the expanded spare parts procurement.
«With these covers, the Bieri Group is making an important contribution to the long-term operational readiness of the DURO vehicle fleet,» the company explains. «The tarpaulins reliably protect the vehicles from the elements while meeting high standards of functionality in military operations.» According to the information provided, all fabrics and components are manufactured in Europe and have been tested for fire resistance.
The material also features special infrared reflectivity. This enhances the camouflage effect against thermal imaging sensors. According to Bieri, the DURO II project «exemplifies how high-quality materials, precision manufacturing and collaborative partnerships contribute to the sustainable modernization of existing vehicle systems».
