Canton Lucerne supports decarbonization of process energy
Lucerne - The Canton Lucerne is providing 1.4 million Swiss francs in funding to help process-intensive companies implement efficiency measures, as well as switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. With the funding, the canton is working towards its goal of making production processes climate-neutral by 2050.
The Canton Lucerne in Switzerland has launched a new program to support the decarbonization of process energy. According to a statement, it is making 1.4 million Swiss francs available as a funding budget in 2025 and 2026. The canton aims to help process-intensive companies implement efficiency measures and switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
Production processes with high specific temperature requirements are still heavily reliant on fossil fuels, according to the canton. Accordingly, fossil-generated process energy accounts for around 10 per cent of direct greenhouse gas emissions in the canton of Lucerne. At the same time, decarbonizing process heat is more complex and costly than decarbonizing building heat. As a result, many companies need additional support in managing the transition to renewable energy sources.
According to the Canton Lucerne, dozens of large and medium-sized companies are currently facing the challenge of making their production processes climate-neutral by 2050. The funding program aims to support measures that work towards this goal at an early stage. Companies can submit their funding applications to the Office for Environment and Energy.
