Canton of Lucerne supports new forms of mobility

Lucerne - The canton of Lucerne is funding two projects aimed at contributing to the mobility transition. The first is at Emmenbrücke Süd bus station, where a mobility monitor is helping to combine different services. The second will see carpooling benches in various municipalities that are intended to encourage spontaneous carpooling.

The canton of Lucerne and its Luzernmobil department, which is responsible for implementing the cantonal sustainable mobility strategy, are looking for mobility reformers. A total of 40,000 Swiss francs is being made available this year for innovative project ideas, pilot projects or initiatives. From 2024, the funding program will be expanded and integrated into the promotion of climate measures, according to a statement.

Two submitted projects are currently being funded. One is the multimodal mobility monitor at Emmenbrücke Süd bus station, the first of its kind in a public space in Switzerland. It is intended to make the options for networked mobility in Lucerne North visible so that they can be combined in the most efficient way to suit individual needs. The digital display shows the availability of bikes, e-bikes, rental cars or e-charging stations, as well as the current traffic situation and bus and train departure times in real time.

The second mobility reformer project is still in the launch phase. The environmental agency Umsicht is looking for pilot municipalities and locations for car-sharing benches that will be set up in spring 2024. The idea is that in locations with a large amount of leisure traffic, such as tourist destinations with no or limited public transport connections, people looking to ride a short distance can sit on one of these benches to show that they are waiting. Anyone who is willing to offer a ride then stops their car and gives the passenger a lift. Municipalities are invited to get in touch with suggestions for locations.
