Canton of Lucerne to Increase Investments in Mobility Infrastructure

Lucerne - The Canton of Lucerne plans to invest more in its mobility infrastructure. By adjusting the financing model, roads will be secured, renewed, and expanded over the long term – an important step for the region’s attractiveness as a business location and for its growing population.

With population growth and a positive economic outlook, the demand for investment is rising significantly. To ensure stable long-term financing, the Lucerne government has submitted a draft proposal for consultation.

At the core of the proposal is a new financing model: in the future, 90 percent of earmarked revenues from vehicle taxes and the heavy vehicle fee (LSVA) will go toward road infrastructure (currently 65 percent). This will enable the canton to maintain, renew, and expand infrastructure where necessary.

The reduced share for public transport will be fully compensated through additional general state funds. This ensures stable financing and even allows for service expansions starting in 2027.

With this adjustment, the Canton of Lucerne is strengthening mobility as a key locational factor and creating the foundation for implementing major infrastructure projects in the future.

The consultation period runs from September 24, 2025, to January 16, 2026.
