CKW launches smart charging app for electric cars

Lucerne - CKW is launching a digital app on the market with the aim of charging electric cars in the most cost-effective manner possible. At the same time, the Smart Charging App will contribute to stabilizing the grid.

The Smart Charging App from CKW is now available in app stores. This is “Switzerland‘s first smart charging app for electric cars”, as the Lucerne-based energy provider writes in a corresponding press release. The digital app ensures that the charging process is carried out in the most cost-effective manner and will also contribute to safeguarding the stability of the grid.

In terms of the latter, the app is able to postpone the charging process to times when network demand is lower than when people have just left work. In addition, the charging process can be adapted to any existing photovoltaic system. Users of the app are rewarded with a reimbursement for each kilowatt hour of smart charging. This could total as much as 100 Swiss francs per year, explains CKW.

User can also set preferences in the app. For example, users can define by what time and how much the vehicle should be charged. The times for off-peak tariffs can also be entered. “With the CKW Smart Charging App, we are the first company to offer an innovative, Switzerland-wide solution for grid stabilization, which also brings great added value to users”, explains Thomas Reithofer, head of the Energy business division at CKW.
