Construction start of the Pilatus Arena in Kriens

Kriens/LU - Halter AG from the canton of Zurich has broken ground on construction of the Pilatus Arena in Kriens in the canton of Lucerne. The multifunctional sports arena can seat 4,000 spectators and is supplemented by residential buildings with 370 apartments. It will open its doors in 2026.

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the Pilatus Arena in Kriens took place on Tuesday, 29 November. According to a press release, the modern sports and event arena has a seating capacity of 4,000 spectators. Indoor sports such as handball, tennis, indoor football and more will be played in the Pilatus Arena. It will also host concerts, congresses, conferences and other events. The project will additionally build 370 apartments and the Pilatus Tower high-rise residential building.

Overall, project investment amounts to more than 200 million Swiss francs, with the Pilatus Arena accounting for around 39 million francs alone. Pilatus Arena AG is the developer behind the Pilatus Tower and Pilatus Arena. Helvetia Insurance Switzerland is the developer of the rental apartment building on Mattenplatz. Marbet Immobilien AG from Lucerne is investor in the base structure of the Pilatus Tower. As majority shareholder in Pilatus Arena AG, the Lucerne branch of Halter AG in Schlieren is responsible for realizing the project as a whole.

According to the construction schedule, the building shell will be completed in the first half of 2025. Both the Arena and the apartment buildings will be completed in the first half of 2026, while the Pilatus Tower is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2026.

The groundbreaking ceremony on the square between Mattenhof railway station and Mattenplatz in Kriens was attended by Toni Bucher, Chairman of the Board of Directors and co-developer of Pilatus Arena AG, Paul Winiker, State Councillor of the Canton of Lucerne, Mayor of Kriens Christine Kaufmann-Wolf, architect Lorenzo Giuliani and Daniel Wehrli from Helvetia Insurance Switzerland. “Together, we have spent ten years battling for the success of the Pilatus Arena,” said Bucher. “This will benefit sport, Kriens and the region as a whole.”
