Elsa launches pillow made from bio-based foam

Emmen/Bubikon - Elsa Schweiz has launched a foam pillow in conjunction with Carpenter that is partly made from residual materials of biological origin. These replace fossil-based components and create a circular economy for products such as used cooking oils, tall oil and food waste, as well as agricultural and forestry residues.

Elsa Schweiz is launching a new ergonomic cushion on the market that uses foam partly manufactured on the basis of bio-based materials. To this end, the family-owned company based in Emmen in the Swiss canton of Lucerne has been collaborating with the foam manufacturer Carpenter, as detailed in a company statement. The foam is said to be «totally Swiss Made» at the company’s factory located in Wolfhausen in the Zürcher Oberland, which is the south-eastern part of the canton of Zurich.

The production process has been certified in accordance with the international sustainability standard ISCC PLUS. «For elsa, this collaboration opens up access to a new generation of certified materials and at the same time facilitates the production of the first pillow in line with ISCC+ criteria in Switzerland», the company writes. However, the quality of the foam is reportedly unaffected: «It provides support, cushioning, and, as with all elsa pillows, can be machine washed.»

The bio-based materials used to make the foam include used cooking oils, tall oil, food waste, and agricultural and forestry residues. These partially replace petroleum used in production activities, which helps to cut CO2 emissions. «Our focus is on using materials that remain in the product lifecycle rather than consuming new resources», comments Daniela Thöny, CEO and owner of elsa. «Every step forward in this direction matters, especially when it comes to products that we use every day».
