Emmi promotes circular economy for packaging

Lucerne - The dairy product manufacturer Emmi is working with more than 70 organizations to close the loops for plastics and drink cartons across Switzerland by 2030 within the context of the Sammlung 2025 project. They have now signed a letter of intent that forms the basis for establishing an umbrella organization.

Emmi has signed a letter of intent that lays the foundation for a circular economy for plastic packaging across all of Switzerland within the Sammlung 2025 project along with more than 70 manufacturers, retail merchants, and disposal firms. It forms the basis of a business plan that will in turn lay the groundwork for establishing an umbrella organization.

The aim is to close loops across the entire value chain by 2030. Head of Sustainability at Emmi Gerold Schatt commented in a press release: «With Sammlung 2025, we are actively driving forward the circular economy and making an important contribution to climate protection.»

The letter of intent sets out the cornerstones of the future system. The participants plan to achieve standardization with just one collection bag across Switzerland. The costs will be covered by bag contributions, contributions from distributing companies, and recycled material revenue. The umbrella organization, which has yet to be created, will be responsible for the collection and recycling system.

Emmi has already signed the pact to create a sustainable circular economy for plastic packaging and beverage cartons in 2022 as part of the Sammlung 2025 project along with more than 70 organizations. According to a press release, Emmi sees this project as «an important step to achieve its ambitious sustainability targets and make packaging 100 percent recyclable by 2027.»
