Energie Wasser Luzern begins wind measurements in Schwarzenberg

Lucerne/Schwarzenberg - Lucerne-based energy service provider ewl Energie Wasser Luzern Holding AG is examining the feasibility of a wind farm in Schwarzenberg. It has begun conducting wind measurements in the Hinterberg area, with initial analyses expected between spring and summer 2027.

Energie Wasser Luzern (ewl) started conducting wind measurements at Büelhöchi in the Hinterberg area of Schwarzenberg in the Swiss canton of Lucerne on 28 October, according to a statement from the regional energy service provider. A 125-meter-high wind measurement mast has been erected that will collect wind and weather data over an 18-month period, helping inform ewl’s decision on a possible local wind farm.

“It is important for us to carefully examine the on-site conditions,” Martin Arnold, member of the executive board and head of project implementation at ewl, is quoted as saying. “Based on that, we will assess whether and how to proceed with the wind project.” He explained that the measurements provide important insights into the project’s economic viability and its potential impact on the surrounding area: in addition to weather conditions and wind direction and speed, the frequency of bat activity in the area is also being examined.

In parallel to taking these measurements, ewl is launching the first phase of local community involvement in the project. It will hold two seminars this fall with property owners and interested members of the community, while a community survey will follow at a later date. Next year, ewl plans to involve additional stakeholders, including environmental organizations, associations, and neighboring communities.
