This years Central Switzerland Innovation Award, which is handed out by the Central Switzerland Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHZ), has been awarded to Thermoplan AG. The company, which is headquartered in Weggis in the canton of Lucerne, manufactures high-quality espresso machines for commercial use. Thermoplan won the award for its Mastrena II espresso machine, which is used by the global coffee chain Starbucks.
Thermoplan began work on Mastrena II around five years ago, and the espresso machine was officially launched on the market in March 2019. According to a statement from the IHZ, the espresso machine stands out for its smart, automatic grind adjustment, quick cycle time with parallel product processes thanks to two brewing chambers, and a unique appearance coupled with optimized functionality.
The jury was particularly impressed by the customer-oriented development of its own innovation combined with digitization, construction and design in an international environment, said jury president Hans Wicki.
Thermoplan has been collaborating with Starbucks for the past 20 years, developing from a machine manufacturer into a strategic and operational partner. According to the IHZ, the continued collaboration with Starbucks will ensure hundreds of jobs in Switzerland in the medium to long term, both for the company and its suppliers. Thermoplan employs around 415 people, 390 of them in the canton of Lucerne.
The 10,000 Swiss francs award will be presented at a ceremony at Thermoplans headquarters on 10 December. This years recognition prizes went to flo-ir (Florin Infrarot) GmbH from Oberdorf in the canton of Nidwalden and Tschopp Holzbau AG from Hochdorf in the canton of Lucerne.
