ETH Zürich launches site search for new GeoLab in the Canton of Lucerne
Lucerne - ETH Zurich is planning to establish the ETH Swiss GeoLab, an interdisciplinary competence center for Earth observation in the Canton of Lucerne. The site requirements have now been defined – property owners are invited to submit location proposals by November 30, 2025.
Over the next decade, ETH Zurich aims to create a research and innovation hub of international significance in the Canton of Lucerne. The ETH Swiss GeoLab will combine data from space, air, and ground, using AI-based analytics and high-performance computing. Its research will contribute to early detection of natural hazards, improved agricultural forecasts, and other data-driven insights into the planet’s systems.
The initiative is strategically led by ETH Professors Thomas Zurbuchen and Verena Griess, with Felix Seidel Caprez serving as Executive Director. Preparations and network development in the Lucerne region are already underway. A series of workshops will connect local universities, companies, and public institutions to explore potential areas of collaboration.
With the publication of the ETH-defined requirements profile, the official site selection process has now begun – in close cooperation with Lucerne Business Development and the Canton of Lucerne. The ideal location will offer excellent accessibility, an inspiring environment, and an open, collaborative atmosphere. Property owners are invited to submit concrete proposals to Lucerne Business Development by November 30, 2025.
The Canton of Lucerne supports the project as an infrastructure partner. Fabian Peter, member of the cantonal government, emphasizes: «This investment in innovation is a tremendous opportunity for the Canton of Lucerne, which offers many suitable locations. We look forward to the next steps in this process together with all partners.»
