The medical technology firm Fresenius Kabi is relocating from Oberdorf (Nidwalden) to Kriens. The crucial factors behind this decision were real estate, rental prices and transport connections. The sister company Fresenius Medical Care will remain in Oberdorf.
According to a report in Fridays edition of Luzerner Zeitung, Fresenius Kabi is set to move to a new location in Mattenhof, Kriens in February 2020. The background to this relocation is reported to be a lack of space at the current site in Oberdorf (Nidwalden), where the medical technology firm is a subtenant of its sister company Fresenius Medical Care. The sister company has now grown to the point that it requires the premises previously assigned to Fresenius Kabi for its own operations.
Dieter Hubmann, General Manager of Fresenius Kabi, explains in the report that the company eventually narrowed down its search for new premises, which originally began 18 months ago, to Stans South and Lucerne South. The decision to opt for Lucerne was reportedly due to three factors: availability of real estate, rental price and public transport connections. In contrast, taxation played no role in the decision, as both locations shortlisted would have produced a similar tax liability.
Around 60 employees working out of Oberdorf will make the move to Kriens next year. The other 60 or so are field workers or warehouse staff. Fresenius Kabi intends to use its new premises for its own growth. Dieter Hubmann commented in the report: We expect to be able to create up to 30 new jobs in Kriens over the medium term. For Ivan Buck, CEO of Business Development Lucerne, Fresenius Kabis decision to relocate to Lucerne, following hot on the heels of Adidas making a similar move, is a reflection of the attractiveness of Lucerne South as a development focus, with the excellent central railway connection a particular highlight.
