Gübelin opens gem museum

Lucerne - Gübelin has opened its own gem museum on Schwanenplatz in Lucerne. In addition to jewelry and precious stones, the museum also showcases the history of the company. The focus here is on the gemological research conducted by Eduard Josef Gübelin.

The Haus zum Stein on Schwanenplatz 7 in Lucerne invites visitors to lose themselves in the world of precious stones. It is here that Gübelin has opened its very own gem museum, as the newspaper «Luzerner Zeitung» reports. In addition to pieces of jewelry and a selection of gemstones, the Gübelin Gem Museum also presents the history of the family business now in its sixth generation. The purpose of the museum is to «share the fascination for gemstones», as Raphael Gübelin, President of the House of Gübelin, explains in the newspaper article.

The intention is not only for the exhibition to showcase precious stones, but also to impart knowledge about the formation and origin of these gems. A focal point of the family history is therefore dedicated to Eduard Josef Gübelin. Among other things, various tools owned by the gemstone expert and researcher, who died in 2005, are on display at the museum.

Following his research trips, Eduard Josef Gübelin also repeatedly brought back precious stones obtained from different mines. These form the basis of Gübelin’s reference stone collection, which is now made up of more than 28,000 different specimens. At the company’s gem lab, these are used to determine the value of gemstones.

In addition to depicting the past, the museum also aims to provide insights into both the present and future. In this regard, the article mentions Provenance Proof. This is the company’s own start-up, which is working to increase transparency in relation to the origin of colorful gemstones via the use of blockchain technology.
