Horw optimizes energy technology at municipal properties

Horw - The municipality of Horw in the canton of Lucerne plans to reduce the CO2 emissions of its municipal properties. By 2036, the energy efficiency of 17 properties will be optimized. Horw is investing 16 million francs in the measures.

The municipality of Horw plans to incrementally optimize the energy efficiency of its municipal properties. The first step will be taken by 2028 with the Kastanienbaum and Hofmatt school buildings, the fire station building, the works yard, a council-owned apartment building on Roseneggweg and the cloakroom building at the Seefeld sports facility, according to a statement from the municipal administration. Further buildings, including the remaining municipal school buildings and the town hall, will follow by 2036. Optimization measures are currently planned for a total of 17 buildings.

The municipal council is seeking to comply with the mandate of the residents' council to reduce the CO2 emissions of the municipal building stock as much as possible by 2040. The plans for the 17 properties that have been selected are detailed in the supplementary report Climate-friendly building stock in the municipality of Horw. According to the report, the CO2 emissions of these 17 properties can be reduced by around 75 per cent. The costs for the corresponding measures are estimated at a total of 17 million Swiss francs.

When it comes to energy-efficient renovations, the ratio between properties and measures should be considered appropriately, it writes. «The potential for reducing greenhouse gases, as well as the structural condition of the properties and the life cycle of the individual components of the building, are essential for prioritizing the properties,» says the statement. Thermal insulation, a switch to climate-friendly energy sources or the installation of solar systems are named as possible measures. The costs should «remain reasonable and be spread over the scheduled period».
