HSLU and CSEM announce professorship in robotics
Lucerne/Neuchâtel - The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) and the CSEM technology and innovation center are jointly establishing a professorship in robotic intelligence. The aim is to strengthen Central Switzerland’s industrial competitiveness and create opportunities for talented individuals.
HSLU and the Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM) aim to contribute to Central Switzerland’s future viability through a joint professorship. The two institutions have jointly advertised the professorship of Collective Human Robot Intelligence since they anticipate that robotics and physical artificial intelligence (AI) will shape the next wave of innovation, as was explained in a statement.
«Applied physical AI will determine how competitive our industry will be in ten years,» says Sarah Hauser, director of the HSLU Department of Computer Science. «Many companies in Central Switzerland are focused on the intersection of AI and robotics. Together with CSEM, we are pooling our expertise to strengthen this development.»
The joint professorship will bring greater understanding of physical AI to companies in Central Switzerland, explains Vincent Revol, Vice President of Industry 4.0 and Life Sciences and a member of CSEM’s Executive Board. «In this way, we strengthen industrial competitiveness, build expertise and create opportunities for talent and new value creation in the region.»
The initiative by HSLU and CSEM builds on examples such as that of Prof. Christophe Ballif. In his dual role at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne and CSEM, he established a division that now has over 90 employees and, together with more than 40 industry partners, develops and implements new photovoltaic technologies, energy storage systems and digital energy systems. Following this model from energy research, the new professorship in robotics and physical AI is intended to build a similar bridge between research, education and industrial innovation.
