HSLU develops recommendations for sustainable high-rise buildings
Lucerne - Researchers from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) have been considering the issue of socially sustainable high-rise residential buildings.
Researchers from several specialist departments at HSLU have been grappling with the question as to how high-rise residential buildings can be developed in line with a socially sustainable model, further details of which can be found in a press release issued by HSLU. Architectural, social and economic aspects were examined for this purpose. The researchers have derived planning and action recommendations based on their findings. The interdisciplinary university project was funded by Innosuisse, the Swiss Innovation Agency.
Sustainable high-rise buildings offer “a high quality of life, both individually and collectively, with a view to promoting community life for present and future generations”, comments project initiator Alex Willener in the press release. In order to meet these requirements, the building must be of use to both residents and those living within its vicinity, in addition to promoting social cohesion and being economically viable, HSLU writes in the press release.
In a high-rise residential building, people with different lifestyles and expectations live under one roof. The researchers recommend that these differences be taken into account as early as the planning stage and highlighted in the completed building. In order for a high-rise to be accepted in the area, it should offer something for the entire district. In the press release, examples cited here include doctors’ surgeries, daycare centers and neighborhood meeting points. In order to adapt the high-rise buildings to changing needs, the researchers recommend that attention is paid during construction to ensuring that rooms can be combined or re-divided with minimal effort.
