HSLU moving into new location
In 2025, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts will move into a new building on Rösslimatt in downtown Lucerne. The Lucerne School of Business and School of Social Work will transfer to this new location.
A new district is to take shape around Rösslimatt in downtown Lucerne by 2040. Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) is to move into a new location in this area, as detailed in a press release. “Around 3,000 students, 6,500 further training participants and 400 employees from both the Lucerne School of Business and School of Social Work will learn, teach and research” across an area of approximately 16,000 square meters from 2025 onwards, the HSLU informs in the press release. Both departments are currently located at five different sites, although in future this will be reduced to just two: the new building in Rösslimatt and Zentralstrasse 9. Marcel Schwerzmann, Member of the Cantonal Government and President of the Concordat Board of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, was quoted in the press release, explaining how the intention is to make Lucerne a more varied, more successful and more attractive place for education and research. He stated that the new location on Rösslimatt represents an important step towards achieving this goal.
In addition to the new building for HSLU, a further six construction sites on Rösslimatt will see other projects gradually planned and constructed, as announced in the design plan Rösslimatt devised by the City of Lucerne and SBB. The plan is to create “varied, attractive mixed usage” possibilities. HSLU President Markus Hodel explains how the university will play a key role in the further development by appealing to companies, start-ups and commercial enterprises.
The first construction site will focus on renaturation processes this year, with construction of the new HSLU building set to get underway in 2021. Commissioning for the second construction site is expected for 2024. Susanne Zenker, Head of Development at SBB Immobilien, commented: “Thanks to the 30-year partnership between SBB and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, we have achieved a major milestone and are making clear our clear commitment to the location of Lucerne”.
