HSLU remodels animation degree

Lucerne – The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is responding to growth in the field of animation with a remodeled Master’s degree. Alongside updated module content, students will be prepared for their entry into the international film industry.

The School of Arts and Design at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is realigning its course for animation filmmakers, which is unique in Switzerland. From academic year 2021/22, the Master’s degree program will be meeting the increased demands of the global animation industry, as the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) explained in a press release.

“Animation is more than just a cinematic genre,“ explains Jürgen Haas, Head of the Bachelor's Program in Animation and in charge of the new Master’s in Animation. “Given digitization, it truly is a key competency in all areas where moving images tell and illustrate a story”.

The fact that this skill is used in more than just television, cinema, games and advertising is often overlooked. Digital post-production also calls for the expertise of such specialists, for example when creating “a spectacular fire-breathing dragon or removing electricity pylons in a medieval landscape, and generally retouching to remove or add everything that is needed for a perfect image”.

Beyond the technical training, students will also benefit from an improved connection to the European and global production networks. The university highlights the various awards that its animators have won at notable film festivals. HSLU itself is award-winning: it was honored with the Best Animation School Award by the Animafest Zagreb. “The newly enhanced Master’s in Animation will help raise the intranational profile of such successes”.
