HSLU to launch Master’s in collaborative spatial development

Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) will be offering a new Master’s degree program in collaborative spatial development starting in the fall semester of 2024. This is open to students from disciplines such as spatial planning, urban development and architecture, as well as landscape architecture and the environmental, economic and social sciences, as HSLU explains in a corresponding press release. «Spatial development projects of tomorrow need inter- and transdisciplinary teams that find the right solutions to topical challenges more than ever», comments Tabea Michaelis in the press release. She will teach the new Master's degree program together with her colleague Amelie-Theres Mayer.
The course is designed to prepare its graduates for the complex challenges of future spatial transformation processes. The focus here will be on how to deal with changing requirements and increasingly scarce resources. The curriculum emphasizes the inclusion of stakeholder groups with different needs in the planning process and mediating between them.
«We see spatial development not as a product, but rather as a process», Michaelis explains. According to the co-director of the course, this process should help to bring about climate-compatible, open and usable spaces. «In order to plan these spaces, you need a holistic understanding of construction culture that starts with existing building stocks and keeps an eye on the political and legal framework as well as economic viability». To achieve this, the students will work together in a practical manner on projects with potential clients.
