Innovative Agrotourism Project in Lucerne Region: Switzerland’s First Silo Hotel Opens in Escholzmatt

An innovative agrotourism project from the Lucerne region is making headlines: Starting mid-August, the Tannenhof farm in Escholzmatt will open Switzerland’s first Silo Hotel – in the heart of the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch.

The organic farm Tannenhof in Escholzmatt (LU) is adding a unique new attraction to the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch: Switzerland’s first-ever Silo Hotel, built into a repurposed grass silo. Bookings will be accepted starting mid-August 2025.

The project was initiated by sisters and farm owners Luzia Kaufmann Hoffmann and Regula Erni-Kaufmann. It was made possible through their Agrotourism Award 2024 win, presented by the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch and the Clientis Entlebucher Bank, and was further supported by the regional GO UP Agro-Alp-Tourism initiative and a successful crowdfunding campaign.

The Silo Hotel spans four levels and accommodates up to four guests. The ground floor houses a bathroom with shower and toilet, while the upper floors include a dining area, reading lounge with sofa bed, and a bedroom with a transparent skylight dome that opens automatically in good weather—offering guests a night under the stars.

Just 700 metres from Escholzmatt train station and directly connected to the region’s hiking and biking network, the Silo Hotel is ideal for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and families. Guests can enjoy local delicacies at breakfast, including fresh eggs and milk straight from the farm.

Sustainability is a top priority: the Tannenhof is certified under the national Swisstainable programme (Level I – committed) and offers e-bike charging stations and a bike repair station. In addition to tourism, the farm also hosts educational programmes such as “School on the Farm,” providing insights into sustainable agriculture even without overnight stays.

The Silo Hotel is a unique example of innovation, sustainability, and regional value creation in rural tourism.

Bookings will be accepted from mid-August via email at info@tannenhof.ch, and soon via the new website: www.tannenhof.ch.
