JTI in Dagmersellen turns 55

Dagmersellen – The “Camel factory” started production in Dagmersellen in 1971. Now the production site of Japan Tobacco International (JTI), it has since developed into an important part of the industry of central Switzerland.

Japan Tobacco International, the local market organization of Dagmersellen in the Swiss canton of Lucerne, is looking back on 55 years of history. Founded as the “Camel factory” in 1971, JTI Dagmersellen has “developed into one of JTI’s most modern production sites in the world and an important pillar of the industry in central Switzerland,” JTI writes in a statement. Around 400 employees from more than 30 countries work in Dagmersellen.

Most products from Dagmersellen are destined for export. At the same time, the company has deep roots in the region. JTI explains that many workers have been active in Dagmersellen for years. When it comes to recruiting and retaining workers, the company counts on flexible working models, comprehensive parental leave policies, training the next generation, and career opportunities for university graduates, among other things. Nihal Açikel, Factory Lead, and Raffaele Santin, General Manager at JTI, commented in the statement: “The workers from across the world and the good local partnerships create an ideal basis for further advancing JTI in Switzerland.”

Dagmersellen’s Community President, Markus Riedweg, noted in the statement: “JTI without Dagmersellen is on longer conceivable.” The statement adds that the cantonal minister Fabian Peter attested that the production site is an important motor for employment and added value. The company plans to make ongoing investments to ensure that “production will remain competitive even in a high-wage country.”
