Lucerne advances plans for through station
Lucerne – The results of the test planning phase for a through station concept are now being discussed publicly in Lucerne. The findings are being summarized in a collaboration report and will be integrated in the development concept.
The public collaboration process for the planned through station in Lucerne has been initiated, the City of Lucerne writes in a press release. The new station concept is described in the press release as a “once-in-a-century project” for the city, region, canton and Central Switzerland alike. During an initial digital information event, project stakeholders informed attendees about the project as a whole and the results of the test planning phase. The seven principles of the planning up to now were presented by three interdisciplinary teams. The event was recorded and can be watched online.
The seven test planning principles define the key pillars of the project during the planning phase. For example, the through station concept should be integrated within a high-performance rail and bus system. The area surrounding the station should be designed as a “modal hub” to promote public transportation in the form of buses, but also cycling and walking too. The through station should also, however, remain accessible to drivers. Two additional squares outside the station should ease the burden on Bahnhofplatz Nord, while the Tribschen area of Lucerne is to be transformed into an appealing part of town.
An exhibition with the results of the test planning phase is expected to be displayed from March onwards in the space in front of the Coop convenience store on the lower level of Lucerne railway station. An online podium discussion and workshops are also in the pipeline.
The public collaboration process ends in April 2021. During this period, all citizens are free to express their views online. Conclusions drawn from a final collaboration report and the prevailing views of the City Council will then be integrated in a development concept, which is due to be presented to the Grand City Council in spring 2022.
