Lucerne In 2018, the number of overnight stays in hotels and resorts in the canton of Lucerne increased to a record high. Around two in three stays were attributable to visitors from abroad. In particular, Lucerne drew in guests from China and the USA.
A new article on the website of Statistics of Lucerne (LUSTAT) reveals that 2.2 million overnight stays were recorded in the canton of Lucerne last year. When compared with the previous year, this represents growth of 3.3 percent. This is a new record. However, the average duration of stays by the 1.2 million guests overall dropped from 1.8 to 1.7 nights.
Guests from Switzerland accounted for 32.7 percent of overnight stays, equating to around 712,000 nights. The remaining two-thirds were logged by visitors from abroad, with those from the USA making up the largest share of 18.7 percent. At the same time, the number of overnight stays for U.S. guests increased by 39,000 and therefore saw the greatest year-on-year growth. The second-largest share of 16.8 percent was attributable to visitors from China. Whats more, Germany and India also accounted for significant shares of 12.1 percent and 6.1 percent, respectively.
In terms of region, 1.4 million nights in 2018 were registered in the city of Lucerne, corresponding to two in three of all overnight stays. This was the greatest absolute growth, with an increase of 56,000 on 2017, while the region of Unteres Wiggertal saw the strongest relative growth of 18.9 percent. Conversely, a year-on-year decline of 14.1 percent was reported by the Michelsamt/Surental region.
