Lucerne ICT Campus fostering MINT talent

Lucerne – In Lucerne, the sixth ICT Campus of Switzerland is being created with the support of CSS Insurance. For this, young talent in the subjects of mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and technology (MINT) is being selected from year seven pupils at schools in the canton. They will then be supported by the Campus long term.

Based in Lucerne, CSS Insurance is the main sponsor of the new CSS ICT Campus Central Switzerland. As CSS reported in a press release, this Campus will be opening at its headquarters on 26 June.

With Muttenz in Basel-Landschaft, Bern, Zurich, St.Gallen and Lenzburg in Aargau, this will be the sixth ICT Campus in Switzerland. Given the acute shortage of professionals in the country, the next generation of talent in the MINT subjects of mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and technology will be fostered. For this, children with an affinity for MINT are being systematically selected from year seven in schools across the canton. They will be individually supported on an ongoing basis at the Campus.

Girls are still in the minority across the MINT subjects, which makes the almost 50 percent share of female pupils in the existing ICT Campus locations all the more remarkable.

This type of MINT promotion is being supported by the ICT Scouts/Campus promotional association in north-western Switzerland. The systematic search and ongoing support for largely hidden talent is “urgently necessary”, said David Tassi, managing director of the regional professional association ICT Vocational Training Central Switzerland and the driving force behind the ICT Campus site in Central Switzerland. The head of Lucerne’s cantonal department for school education, Aldo Magno, rates this new initiative as it “perfectly complements” the department’s own efforts in this area.
