Lucerne once again receives European Energy Award Gold label
Lucerne - The city of Lucerne has received the European Energy Award Gold label for the fourth time since 2009. With 445 out of a possible 500 points, Lucerne is one of the Gold cities with the highest ratings in Switzerland. More than 1,500 communities across 16 countries take part in the European Energy Award.
The city of Lucerne has once again received the European Energy Award Gold for its advanced energy commitment. According to a press release, it ranked third in Switzerland among the Gold cities. Lucerne received 445 out of a possible 500 points in the assessment.
Lucerne has been an energy city since 1999 and received the Gold label for the first time in 2009. This is the highest award for energy cities in Europe. Lucerne received the award again for years of commitment to saving energy and climate protection in spatial planning, construction, and building maintenance as well as transport policy. According to a press release from the city of Lucerne, it has been able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from almost 7 metric tons per head in the 90s to 5.1 metric tons in 2021.
Last year, voters endorsed the new climate and energy strategy, which sees Lucerne aim to reduce its energy-related greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2040. According to information from the city, this target is to be approached for the time being with 32 specific measures, which will be implemented by 2030.
The press release goes on to state that the city owes its positive assessment as a Gold energy city to the population as well. For this reason, 200 tickets for the new exhibition at the Museum of Transport Experience Energy! are being given out for free. This provides well-founded background knowledge and ideas as well as gamified and experience-oriented ways of examining the subjects of energy and the climate crisis.
