LUKS brings children’s hospital and gynecological clinic under one roof
Lucerne - Lucerne Cantonal Hospital (LUKS) has officially opened its new Children's Hospital of Central Switzerland and its new Women's Clinic. By closely integrating the two facilities, the aim is to create optimal conditions for modern female healthcare and obstetrics, as well as healthcare provision for children and adolescents.
Lucerne Cantonal Hospital has celebrated the opening of its new building. According to a statement, it offers modern facilities for pediatric medicine, obstetrics and gynecology. A key element of this project is bringing the Children’s Hospital of Central Switzerland and the new Women’s Clinic together under one roof. In her speech, Dr. Michaela Tschuor, Head of the Department of Health and Social Affairs for the Canton of Lucerne, described this decision as «visionary, courageous and correct». Both facilities are set to move into the new building over the coming weeks.
The new perinatal center itself also brings together key specialist areas related to pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care. This is intended to facilitate collaboration among the various specialists, thereby supporting coordinated care for mother and child.
LUKS describes the new building as «one of the largest and most visionary infrastructure projects in its history so far». The new construction project was realized «under challenging conditions» when it first got underway back in 2020. According to current projections, a total of 202 million Swiss francs of the investment are allocated to the children’s hospital, with the gynecological health center benefiting from a sum of 84 million Swiss francs.
According to the information, services and quality standards above and beyond the regular performance mandate were made possible thanks to the Stiftung Zukunft Kinderspital Zentralschweiz (Future Children's Hospital Central Switzerland Foundation), which was established in 2020. «In the future, parents and primary caregivers will be even more actively involved in patient care», comments Prof. Dr. Martin Stocker, Head of the Children's Hospital. «Children, families and ultimately the quality of care itself all stand to benefit from this».
The new Women’s Clinic «creates more privacy for our patients while at the same time facilitating collaboration between the various specialist departments», as Prof. Dr. Christine Brambs and Dr. Corina Christmann, who jointly lead the gynecological clinic, explain. «This benefits both the patients and our teams».
