Matica AG and HSLU establish SeasON Energy AG

Zurich/Wagenhausen/Lucerne - Matica AG and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) have founded a start-up for their SeasON sorption heat pump. This is intended to industrialize the technology, which has already won several awards.

According to a statement, Matica AG from Wagenhausen in the Swiss canton of Thurgau and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts have founded SeasON Energy AG. The aim here is to industrialize and commercialize the SeasON sorption heat pump technology, which was jointly developed by the two partners over the past three years. It stores excess renewable energy in the summer using a thermochemical process and provides heating in the winter with almost no additional electricity required.

«By founding the spin-off SeasON Energy AG, we have taken another step to develop this pioneering technology in preparation for market launch», comments Matica CEO Marc Lüthi. He will assume operational management of the greentech start-up based in Zurich.

«The first pilot plant, which has been in operation at the abattoir in Frauenfeld for a year now, has proven that the technology works», explains Benjamin Fumey, SeasON Energy board member and head of the CC Thermal Energy Systems and Process Engineering research group at the Institute for Mechanical Engineering and Energy Technology of the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture.

A second pilot plant is located at the post office delivery depot in Kaltenbach in the canton of Thurgau, while a third is based at a residential building in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. SeasON Energy plans to implement around a dozen more pilot projects over the course of the next 12 to 18 months, with the aim of demonstrating performance and economic viability.

In 2025, the SeasON project was awarded the Prix Watt d’OR in addition to claiming the Greenovation Award. Moreover, SeasON was one of the three finalists in the category of Industry Innovation for the Swiss Technology Award.
