Most modern sawmill in Switzerland being built

Buttisholz LU – The ground-breaking ceremony took place this week for the new sawmill of Tschopp Holzindustrie AG. The company has invested 75 million Swiss francs to build the most modern sawmill in Switzerland. It should commence operations in Spring 2023.

Tschopp Holzindustrie AG in Buttisholz in the Lucerne region of Switzerland is investing 75 million Swiss francs in order to replace its 21-year-old, overloaded sawmill. According to information from the company, this should create the most modern sawmill in Switzerland, spanning 20,000 square meters. The business is run by the third generation of the family, brothers Ronald and Daniel Tschopp.

According to a press release, Tschopp Holzindustrie AG is sending an important signal for the domestic timber industry with this investment. This means that more wood-based materials from Swiss wood could be available on the market in the long term.

The new factory is designed for 300,000 cubic meters of logs, which are to be managed by the log yard for single-shift operation and by the saw line including the sorting plant and stacking systems for products in up to two shifts. Spruce/fir from native forests is also to be processed in future, for which Tschopp will continue to count on the “long-standing, professional partnership with tried and tested raw timber suppliers.”

Tschopp Holzindustrie AG specializes in the manufacture of plywood for the construction industry. It has also been producing pellets from waste wood for the energy sector since 2005. Tschopp is the market leader in Switzerland for both areas.

After the new sawmill has been put into commission, timber companies should also be offered products that are currently not manufactured at all domestically or not on an industrial scale, meaning that they must be imported from abroad, such as three-ply natural wood panels.
