MSD looks back on 50 years of its Schachen site
Lucerne/Schachen/Rahway - MSD Merck Sharp & Dohme is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone for its research and development center in Schachen. MSD has invested more than 230 million Swiss francs in this site over the past 20 years.
On July 9, 1976, MSD Merck Sharp & Dohme laid the foundation stone for its site in Schachen in the Swiss canton of Lucerne, as the Swiss subsidiary of the global pharma group headquartered in Rahway in the US State of New Jersey writes in a statement. Since then, the subsidiary has «evolved from a small operation into an important part of MSD’s global network», the company explains further. Over the past 20 years, MSD has invested more than 230 million Swiss francs in the Schachen-based research and development center.
MSD operates analytical and microbiological laboratories in Schachen, in addition to developing biologics, among other activities. The site is also home to one of MSD’s three global forensic laboratories, where suspected counterfeits of MSD medicines from Europe, the Middle East and Africa are investigated.
«The Schachen site is an important part of our global network and exemplifies MSD’s innovative strength», as Franz Escherich, Chairman of the Board of the MSD Group in Switzerland, comments in the statement, adding that: «The work of the local teams plays a key role in advancing innovative medicines for patients around the world». The company intends to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its research and development center in Schachen with a series of internal and external events over the remainder of this year.
