Perlen Industrieholding establishes energy hub
Root/Perlen/Frauenfeld - Through their joint venture BESS Perlen AG, Perlen Industrieholding and the Valyou Investment Foundation are investing in a battery storage system, which is being supplied by the southern German firm ADS-TEC Energy and will be located at the industrial site in Perlen. The Frauenfeld-based wattss AG is responsible for project management.
According to a statement, Perlen Industrieholding is implementing a battery energy storage system (BESS) for renewable energy at its industrial site in Perlen in the Swiss canton of Lucerne. The system is being supplied by ADS-TEC Energy, a company based in Nürtingen in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg. The battery storage facility is to be integrated into the existing infrastructure and is set to be operational before the end of 2026. According to the company, this project is part of a long-term strategy aimed at transforming industrial sites from mere production facilities into active participants in the energy system.
«With the battery storage system, we are systematically developing our industrial site into a modern energy hub and unlocking new value creation opportunities», as Dr. Florian Geiger, CEO of Perlen Industrieholding AG and Perlen Papier AG, comments in the statement. In an initial phase, the focus is on participating in the balancing energy markets, while further commercialization opportunities in day-ahead and intraday trading are reportedly envisaged in the future.
The investment is being made by BESS Perlen AG, which was founded at the end of 2025 as a joint venture between Perlen Industrieholding and the Valyou Investment Foundation. According to its Managing Director Yonten Wagma, «this project demonstrates how institutional capital, attractive industrial sites, and innovative energy technologies can work together to create sustainable and attractive infrastructure assets».
The Frauenfeld-based wattss AG from the Swiss canton of Thurgau is responsible for overall project management. «Large-scale storage projects like the one in Perlen demonstrate the potential of bringing industry and energy markets together», as CEO Marco Rüegg explains. «It is crucial to consider technology, the industrial site, financing, and commercialization as an integrated whole from the outset».
By investing in this battery storage facility, Perlen Industrieholding is making progress in its realignment, through which it is seeking to evolve from a traditional paper manufacturer into a diversified industrial company. To this end, the company is also seeking to add new paper products to its portfolio and enter the market for molded-fiber packaging solutions.
