Pistor invests 15 million Swiss francs to expand electric vehicle fleet

Rothenburg - Pistor plans to invest around 15 million Swiss francs in electric trucks by 2030. In the future, at least half of the Swiss wholesaler’s trucks will be electric. With the launch of its 30th electric vehicle, Pistor has taken another step towards this goal.

Pistor AG, headquartered in Rothenburg in the Swiss canton of Lucerne, is expanding its fleet of electric trucks. After introducing 11 since the start of the year, the wholesaler has put its 30th electric truck into service, an Iveco S-eWay. Now, 30 of the company’s 109 trucks are powered by electricity, according to a statement. The trucks are in operation at the Rothenburg site in Chavornay in the Swiss canton of Vaud and Sennwald in the Swiss canton of St.Gallen.

By 2030, Pistor aims for at least 50 per cent of its vehicles to be electric, enabling reductions in CO2 equivalents of 1,600 metric tons annually. The wholesaler says it plans to invest an additional 15 million Swiss francs to achieve these goals.

As well as reducing emissions, there are economic factors at play, according to the statement. “On the one hand, more and more customers want a supply chain that is as sustainable as possible,” CEO Patrick Lobsiger is quoted as saying. On the other, he continues, electric trucks are now cheaper to operate and maintain than vehicles with internal combustion engines.

Pistor combines both road and rail transport. Overnight, goods destined for western and eastern Switzerland are taken by train to the company’s distribution centers in Chavornay and Sennwald. They are then delivered to customers by truck. According to Pistor, rail transport saves approximately 1 million kilometers of road travel every year. The wholesaler supplies bakeries, restaurants, hospitals, and nursing homes with food and other goods.
