Platform for space-based innovation being created at Technopark Luzern
Root – The newly launched Space Systems Innovation Platform (SSIP) in the canton of Lucerne is driving the connection between Swiss industry and research with space-based technologies. With headquarters in the Technopark Luzern, the SSIP helps to bring space research into innovations in a wide range of fields.
With the launch of the Space Systems Innovation Platform (SSIP), independent players want to help Switzerland strengthen its position in advanced technology and applied research. According to a press release from the SSIP, applied space innovation, industrial transformation and global collaboration are at the heart. The platform is headquartered at Technopark Luzern – a region that is said to offer a favorable combination of industrial strength, academic engagement and international connectivity.
Research with space-based technologies will be used to create diverse solutions. Pharma, biotech, advanced materials, automation and advanced manufacturing are examples of sectors listed. The press release states it provides companies, universities and startups with expert guidance and tailored support, also in connection with existing programs if required.
The platform defines itself as neutral and inclusive. This is seen as a key factor in strengthening the innovation ecosystem by enabling collaboration, expanding capacity and unlocking new opportunities for global engagement. The team has managed to bring together around 200 partners in a short space of time. They include global players such as Barrios Technologies, Titans Space, Stardust, GeoPaq, Elara Aerospace and the Lean Spacetech space hub.
«SSIP was created to serve Switzerland - not to compete, but to complement. Our mission is to bring people, ideas, and technologies together in a neutral environment where innovation can advance with clarity, precision, and trust.» said Paulo Pinheiro. The Program Manager at SSIP underlined the basic mission that all activities should be aligned with the broader Swiss innovation framework.
The first announced event is the Global Microgravity Forum on 22 and 23 January 2026. Experts will gather at the Technopark Luzern to discuss how microgravity and biotech can be linked in terms of commercial applications.
