SGV Group to modernize dockyard in Lucerne
Lucerne - The SGV Group is set to upgrade its shipyard facilities in Lucerne that were first opened more than a century ago by building a new service and maintenance center. The shipping, marine technology and catering group is investing a sum of 20 million Swiss francs in this modernization project.
SGV Holding AG will modernize its shipyard facilities located at Werftstrasse 5 in Lucerne. By 2028, a new service and maintenance center is to be built here, as the shipping, marine technology and catering group from Lucerne writes in a press release. The SGV Group will invest nearly 20 million Swiss francs in the shipyard upgrade project, which is being primarily carried out by the Bern-based firm Kissling + Zbinden AG.
The centerpiece of the modernization project relates to a lowerable ship lift for vessels weighing up to 550 tons. This is set to replace the floating dock built in 1907 and the slipway constructed way back in 1882. A new work platform in front of the shipyard hall is planned to replace the old floating dock. In addition, a modern drainage system will be installed in the floor of the existing shipyard hall, the aim of which is to prevent wastewater from flowing directly into the lake.
The SGV Group intends to replace additional compensation measures with an «ecological innovation» beneath the new shipyard platform. In specific terms, deadwood structures will be installed here as a refuge for young fish. «The shipyard renovation is an investment in the future», as the company explains, adding that: «It enhances the quality of the SGV Group’s location on Lake Lucerne, in addition to putting in place the conditions for sustainable ship maintenance and ensuring that shipping in Lucerne remains a visible, functioning and ecological component of public transport and tourism in the future».
