Site of the cantonal hospital in Sursee to be redeveloped
Sursee - The Kantonsspital Luzern is being moved to Schenkon from its current location in Sursee. As a result, the canton of Lucerne and city of Sursee are planning to redevelop the existing site. Situated across 47,000 square meters with a lakeside view, this area is to be transformed into a residential and commercial district.
The Kantonsspital Luzern, which serves as the cantonal hospital of Lucerne, no longer meets the requirements of a modern health center. As such, it is being relocated to Schenkon together with the Seeblick nursing center. As detailed in a statement, the canton of Lucerne, which owns the land on which the hospital is currently located, is keen to develop plans to ensure an attractive future for this site together with the city of Sursee.
Initial site assessments indicate that it is suitable for a mixed-use development featuring residential and commercial spaces, which would allow for the creation of housing for families and couples, as well as single people and senior citizens. Service providers and restaurants could also be included in the plans to complement the development. Located above Lake Sempach, the site is located in close proximity to the old town of Sursee with excellent transport links already in place.
“The relocation presents a unique opportunity to repurpose the current site in Sursee”, as Reto Wyss, member of the cantonal government of Lucerne comments in the statement, adding that: “This attractive site in a prime location with a lakeside view is to be rezoned for this purpose. The next planning steps will set out exactly what is feasible and where”. A planning phase for the proposed new district is scheduled to get underway in spring 2026 to coincide with the relocation of the hospital. This will include various meetings with local residents and stakeholders. The site is expected to be fully vacated by 2034, after which it could then be redeveloped. The option of incorporating the existing buildings into the redevelopment plans is also under consideration
