Swiss nuclear fusion specialists aim to set up industry association
Root - Smolsys, in collaboration with the Swiss Industry Liaison Office, has hosted the second meeting of suppliers to the European nuclear fusion project ITER at Technopark Lucerne, located in Root in the canton of Lucerne. The participants aim to establish a Swiss association that can participate in nuclear fusion projects worldwide.
Swiss companies are pooling their expertise in nuclear fusion. Now, the Swiss Industry Liaison Office for International Research Organization, together with smolsys, has held the second meeting of Swiss suppliers to the European nuclear fusion project ITER at Technopark Lucerne on the 5 November, according to a statement.
Representatives from leading Swiss companies involved in nuclear fusion attended the meeting, where participants discussed how businesses in the country could establish a consortium that would participate in nuclear fusion projects worldwide, beyond ITER.
Michael Hübner from the Swiss Industry Liaison Office said he was very pleased with the outcome of the meeting. «It was very productive and interesting to see how much the industry players are keen to participate in this initiative,» he is quoted as saying.
François Plewinski from DAES SA, headquartered in Geneva, has a similar view. «After this meeting, I would like this business association to start working and acting quickly to open business opportunities for all of us,» he said. Francesco Elio is also committed to cooperation. «I think it is very important to have this kind of networking event, and perhaps an association as well, in order to work together toward this fusion revolution within Switzerland», said the CEO of Deutelio AG, based in Manno in Ticino. Graciana Khouri from ABB Switzerland, too, described the idea of a Swiss nuclear fusion organization as «very interesting», saying «it is important to assemble all the major forces».
The Swiss Industry Liaison Office is funded by the Swiss government’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs. Additionally, it is supported by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, the Paul Scherrer Institute, the University of Geneva, and Swissmem.
