Swiss Steel and Canada Nickel plan to bring low-carbon steel to Europe

Lucerne/Toronto - Swiss Steel and Canada Nickel have set their sights on a long-term partnership for the supply of low-carbon steel from Canada. From 2030 onwards, the planned partnership should provide Swiss Steel with exclusive access to 1 million tons of semi-finished steel products per year.

The Lucerne-based Swiss Steel Group and Canada Nickel Company from Toronto have reached an agreement concerning a planned collaboration. The envisaged partnership would provide the Swiss Steel Group with access to 1 million tons of low-carbon billets and blooms that will then be further processed for its specialty steel production from the year 2030 onwards. According to a statement, this will see Canadian resources and energy advantages combined with the Swiss Steel Group’s specialty steel manufacturing expertise and established European customer networks. The companies have already developed an initial supply concept, which has been technically validated for facilities in the USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and France.

According to Frank Koch, CEO of the Swiss Steel Group, the planned partnership supports a strategic focus on Swiss Steel’s industrial footprint, at the same time as securing flexible access to competitive, low-carbon pre-materials. “It would strengthen our ability to serve our customers with high-quality specialty steels while increasing flexibility across our production network”, Koch states, adding that: “Together with Canada Nickel Company, we will now work towards translating this concept into a commercially and technically viable long-term partnership”.

Mark Selby, CEO of the Canada Nickel Company, adds: “Canada’s mineral resources and competitive, low carbon energy advantages, combined with Swiss Steel’s manufacturing expertise and European market access, create an opportunity to build secure, low-carbon supply chains that benefit both economies. Rather than simply exporting energy, Canada Nickel is using this energy for value-added production here at home”.
