Switzerland holds school computer science conference

Morschach/Lucerne - The international workshop for computer science education at primary and secondary levels has been held in Switzerland for the very first time. More than 80 participants exchanged views in Morschach on the state of research in computer science teacher education.

The Primary and Secondary Computing Education workshop has taken place in Switzerland for the very first time. This was the 17th time it has been held and it was located in Morschach in the canton of Schwyz. More than 80 researchers were involved, predominantly from Switzerland and Germany, but also from the Netherlands and the USA as well as the UK, Malta, South Africa, and other countries. The workshop was organized by the endowed chair of computer science teacher education S1. It is supported by the Pädagogische Hochschule Luzern [University of Teacher Education Lucerne], the School of Computer Science and Information Technology of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, and the Schwyz University of Teacher Education. It is largely funded by Bern-based foundation Hasler Stiftung.

According to a press release, the conference focused on exchange regarding the state of research in computer science teacher education and computer science training at all school levels. Furthermore, the use of new tools, subjects, and content in lessons, the relevance of computer science within the context of digital imaging, physical computing, block-based programming, and gender-specific characteristics in online programming courses were all discussed.

Mareen Grillenberger, Head of the Endowed Professorship of Computer Science Education Training S1 and event organizer, commented: “This home game means that Switzerland will benefit especially from international knowledge. This can be seen from the numerous applications and the many contributions from researchers in Switzerland.”
