Thermoplan acquires Mikafi

Weggis/Schlieren - Thermoplan has acquired the coffee startup Mikafi with its Mikafi roaster, which enables customized roasting for restaurateurs. Thermoplan is currently further developing the Mikafi roaster in terms of technology, design and functionality and actively shaping the future of coffee preparation.

The fully automatic coffee machine manufacturer Thermoplan from Weggis in the canton of Lucerne has acquired the Schlieren-based startup Mikafi  in the canton of Zurich, as was reported in a press release. The Mikafi project is an innovative, compact tabletop coffee roaster that enables green coffee beans to be freshly roasted directly on site in the café. Using an app, restaurateurs can access pre-set roast profiles online and create individual signature roasts. According to information on the company website, the customized roasting solution has already helped boost revenue based on coffee sales numbers at Parterre Lucerne by 30 percent.

Thermoplan’s aim in acquiring the startup is to bring the Mikafi roaster to market maturity in terms of technology, design and functionality and actively shape the future of coffee preparation. The two companies have been involved as partners in the past. With the takeover, Thermoplan is taking an important step in its corporate strategy, as the press release explains: Mikafi will in future offer customers the entire bean-to-cup journey from a single source – from green coffee and individual roasting to the perfect cappuccino.

Thermoplan is a global manufacturer of fully automatic coffee machines for professional use and supplies customers in over 80 countries.

Mikafi emphasizes transparency in its coffee supply chain and claims to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 6 percent compared to conventional roasting.
