Lucerne/Salamanca - The University of Lucerne and the University of Salamanca in Spain are to collaborate in future. As the University of Lucerne pursues a policy of greater internationalization, the partnership represents a first step on this journey.

The University of Lucerne and University of Salamanca have signed a cooperation agreement. According to a press release, this defines a framework for the future cooperation with Spain’s oldest university in the areas of research and teaching, in addition to other fields of mutual interest. In specific terms, the partnership will help to promote visiting professorships and the exchange of researchers, staff and students between the two institutions.

In addition, the collaboration will also extend to the qualifications of academic staff, collaboration in research, joint applications to funding institutions and the organization of symposia, workshops and conferences. Moreover, experiences regarding teaching methods are also to be shared.

As the press release explains further, this cooperation is a step towards increased internationalization at the University of Lucerne, which has set itself the goal of becoming one of Europe’s leading research and teaching institutions specializing in human sciences by 2030. «The collaboration with the University of Salamanca opens up many opportunities for exchange or joint projects thanks to its strong focus on the human sciences», as Prof. Dr Bruno Staffelbach, Rector of the University of Lucerne, explains in the press release.

The agreement allows four doctoral and/or postdoctoral researchers per year from both universities to move to Lucerne or Salamanca for the academic year. According to Raúl Sánchez Prieto, Vice-Rector for International Relations of the University of Salamanca, this makes the University of Lucerne «our fundamental reference in Switzerland».
