Waldemme hydroelectric power plant set commence operations in 2023

Lucerne - The largest hydropower project in the canton of Lucerne can now be realized. CKW has approved the construction loan for the Waldemme hydroelectric power plant. The new facility looks set to start producing green electricity as early as 2023.

Construction work on the new Waldemme hydroelectric power plant located in Flühli in the canton of Lucerne can now proceed in the spring of 2022. The Board of Directors of Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke AG (CKW) has approved the loan required to finance the project, further details of which can be found in a press release. The cantonal government of the canton of Lucerne had previously given the green light to the project.

The Waldemme hydroelectric power plant represents the largest hydropower project in the canton of Lucerne. The new facility will boast an output of 1.4 megawatts and produce 6.5 gigawatt hours of electricity on average. This is sufficient to cover the annual energy requirements of around 1,500 average four-person households. The power plant is expected to commence operations in 2023, while the total costs for the project will come in at approximately 12.4 million Swiss francs.

“The power plant will not only produce urgently needed energy for the energy transition, but will also make a positive ecological contribution to Waldemme area”, explains Martin Schwab, CEO of CKW, in the press release. This is a good example of a win-win situation bridging the dichotomy between the production of energy on the one hand and environmental concerns on the other, he states further. Moreover, the investment will help the canton of Lucerne achieve its energy and climate policy goals.
