Willisau to become the economic backbone of the region

Willisau - The Willisau employment area is to be sustainably developed and transformed into the economic backbone of the region as a whole. To this end, various stakeholders from the canton of Lucerne and the city of Willisau have now signed a corresponding cooperation agreement.

The further development of the Willisau employment area is now being tackled after the canton of Lucerne designated a large part of this area as one of its 12 developments focuses (ESP). To this end, the city of Willisau, the Region Lucerne West municipal association, the Department of Planning and Business and Department of Transport and Infrastructure of the canton of Lucerne, as well as the investment promotion agency Lucerne Business, have all signed a corresponding cooperation agreement.

As detailed by Region Lucerne West in a press release, due to its commercial diversity, the Willisau ESP lacks a consistent target vision for attracting businesses and the development of transport infrastructure in the future. In order to remedy this, the first step involves devising an overall concept. “The ESP Willisau is to be developed sustainably, with the aim of becoming an attractive and emergent employment area and the economic backbone of the entire region”, the press release states.

Private stakeholders should be able to contribute their ideas to help shape the longer-term concept, with further development steps and implementation measures ultimately derived from these. According to the information, the aim is to transform the Willisau ESP into a high-demand location for companies, property owners and employees. With this in mind, accessibility and connectivity for all modes of transport should therefore be ensured.

Cantonal development priorities defined in the cantonal master plan include large employment areas in easily accessible locations. From a cantonal perspective, there is a primary economic interest in the structural development of such locations.
