Zelsius launches emissions calculator for SMEs

Root - Zelsius, from the Swiss canton of Lucerne, has brought its new emissions calculation software on 8 May to the market. The technology enables SMEs to identify and measure their biggest sources of emissions, providing them with a starting point for reducing their emissions to net zero by 2050.

Zelsius has published its emissions calculation software, according to a statement dated 8 May, 2025. It is designed to help SMEs measure, track and reduce their emissions in a simple and cost-effective way.

The Climate and Innovation Act came into force this year, requiring all companies in Switzerland to reduce their direct and indirect emissions to net zero by 2050. However, according to a 2022 AXA study, only one in eight Swiss SMEs knows how much pollution it produces directly or indirectly.

«It is important to us that even small companies are able to calculate their carbon footprint,» Co-founder and Managing Director Adina Hochuli is quoted as saying. «Because only when we quantify something can we effectively reduce it.»

Her company, which is a spin-off from Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts based at Technopark Lucerne, aims to standardize the currently inconsistent, costly, and labor-intensive process of CO2 accounting. Zelsius describes its new digital emissions calculation method as the first step toward a platform-based solution that can support companies on their path to net zero with data-based recommendations for action.

«If we want to achieve net zero by 2050, we need to start collecting large amounts of comparable and consistent emissions data,» Hochuli added. «This will enable not only companies, but also investors, researchers, and legislators to make effective and economically sound decisions going forward.»
